Settings in Fiction Workshop

In this interactive workshop, we explore how to make fictional worlds vivid and immersive through rich, sensory detail.

Participants discover what setting really means – not just the physical place or time, but the atmosphere, textures and emotional resonance that make a story feel real.

Through guided exercises, we go beyond visual description to engage all five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Each sense is unpacked with examples from well-known novels and short, practical writing activities designed to sharpen observation skills and deepen reader immersion. We’ll also examine how setting supports story, shaping character, mood and plot.

This workshop encourages experimentation with simile, metaphor and other techniques to evoke place without slipping into cliché.

The session is informal, interactive, and creative, leaving writers with practical tools to make their settings more tangible and fresh material to develop in their own stories.
